Expanded polystyrene; is it worth considering any other insulation options?

Howling winds, freezing temperatures, snow that turns to ice overnight and makes it impossible to get anywhere. This is winter, and no other season causes as much discomfort to homeowners if they haven’t got their homes properly insulated to stop heat generated from the boiler escaping through the walls and ceiling.

Insulation has developed to the point where we have a few materials which are universally accepted as being the most effective at keeping heat in the house where it belongs, such as fibreglass, which is used to pack wall and ceiling cavities. The denser the material used is in terms of its molecular structure, the harder it is for the heat to escape through it and subsequently through the outer walls.

One of the materials that has recently grown in popularity is expanded polystyrene, which generally comes in boards of varying sizes (but usually a minimum of an inch thick) when it is used for insulation, rather than homeowners having to use those inefficient little peanuts that things in boxes are sometimes packed with to protect them. The material is created by chemically expanding a polystyrene polymer into different densities, which are suitable for different parts of buildings.

As a method of insulation, it is a better investment than many materials available because it is water-resistant, meaning it won’t get mouldy or be affected by mildew, though it can be affected by sunlight, the sun shouldn’t be shining on it so that won’t be a problem. You won’t have to replace it for years, which saves you money and the time that it would take to arrange while you enjoy its undiminished benefits. It’s a simple decision to make, don’t consider any other options!
